I think Doug used to be a mess hall cook. We had the biggest pan of macaroni and cheese I've ever seen. But 22 guys showed up and we worked it over pretty good. Of course the brownies and cake helped round out the meal. The veggies did get a reprieve from the evenings fare. We washed everything down with some coffee and cola to round out our dinner. Thanks to all who prepared a great meal.
Tom was our speaker for the evening and he began by asking the question, " Is turning from sin a requirement for salvation?"
He pointed out that the root meaning of repent is to "change your mind," not turn from sin as it is often defined in tracts and literature. If turning from sin, was a condition of salvation, Tom asked, "How much sin do I have to turn from? Which sins do I have to turn from?" Sin is within you, how therefore do you turn from it? If you say you must turn from all sin, who would be saved? Nobody! Interestingly, the word repent does not even occur in the book of John which contain many of our favorite salvation passages.
In regard to salvation, when a person repents, they change their mind about Christ. They turn from whatever they are trusting in for salvation and trust in Him instead. The requirement of repentance is fulfilled when a person believes in Christ as their savior.
Although "repent" does not mean to "turn from sin" it is important for a Christian to turn from sin.
Turning from sin is not an extra step that precedes salvation, but it should be a result of salvation. Turning from sin is a daily battle that every Christian must face as we are tempted day by day.
